5 Signs Your Fitness is Improving that Don’t Use the Scale

In-Shape | 06 Apr, 2023 | Wellness Tips & Trends | Return|

At the start of a fitness journey, it can be hard to gauge our progress and it's easy to get discouraged if we don't see immediate results. But fitness improvements can take time, and it's important to look for all of the different signs that you're making progress – not just the number on the scale. That way you can feel engaged and motivated to keep on going all year!

Here are five signs that your fitness is improving that have nothing to do with scale:

1. Increased Stamina and Endurance

One of the first signs that your fitness is improving is increased stamina and endurance. You'll find that you can do more without getting tired as quickly. For example, if you were only able to run for 5 minutes when you started your fitness journey, but now you can run for 10 or 15 minutes, this is a clear sign of progress.

2. Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion

Improved flexibility and range of motion are also great indicators of improved fitness. As you continue to exercise, you'll find that you can move more easily and without pain. For example, if you were only able to touch your toes with difficulty before, but now you can easily touch your toes, this is a sign that your flexibility has improved. Plus, mobility and flexibility are crucial to our health longevity not just for reaching specific health or physique goals.

3. Increased Strength and Muscle Mass

As you continue to exercise, you'll notice that you can lift heavier weights and perform exercises with more ease. You may also notice an increase in muscle mass, which can be measured by changes in body composition or increased muscle definition. One great way to track your growth in muscle mass is by stopping by the club and stepping on the In-Body scanner. One scan a month is included as part of The Elevate Package. It breaks down your muscle mass percentage as well as your body fat percentage which gives you a full picture of what you’re made of. If the number on the scale isn’t budging, but according to the In-Body, body fat is decreasing and muscle mass is increasing, you’re making progress!

4. Better Resting Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate is a measure of how efficiently your heart is working. A lower resting heart rate is a sign that your heart is getting stronger and more efficient, which is a clear sign of improved fitness. If you notice a decrease in your resting heart rate, this is a great indicator that your fitness is improving. Chances are, if your endurance is improving, so is your resting heart rate.

5. Improved Mood and Mental Health

Finally, improved mood and mental health are important signs of improved fitness. Exercise releases endorphins that can boost your mood and reduce stress. As you continue to exercise, you may notice that you feel more energized, focused, and positive. This is a great way to track progress, because sometimes it doesn’t show up physically at first. But improved mental health is priceless and such a great measure of how far you’ve come.

Now go ahead, celebrate that progress!
