A Guide to Thrive During the Holidays

In-Shape | 27 Nov, 2023 | Return|

Navigating the holiday season is full of both joy and challenge. With all the festivities come heightened stress and high expectations, which, if left unchecked, may lead to excessive indulgence in food, drinks, and spending. This can result in weight gain, anxiety, sleep disturbances, a weakened immune system, and a loss of that cherished holiday spirit. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with this guide to thrive this holiday season.

It's tempting to believe that we can reset our goals come January, but why wait when a few intentional adjustments can help you preserve your holiday joy, reduce stress, and stay aligned with your health and fitness objectives? This way, you can welcome January without the usual holiday weight gain.

Manage Expectations

It's crucial to remember that things may not always go as planned. Embrace flexibility and trust that even if something doesn't go your way, your joy comes from within, not external circumstances. High expectations can lead to stress, especially during the holidays.

Say "No" to Joyless Obligations

Before committing to an event, take a moment to consider if it will truly bring you joy. It's perfectly acceptable to decline invitations that don't resonate with you. When deciding what to say "yes" to, ask yourself if it's something you genuinely want to do or feel obligated to. Doing things out of obligation can lead to resentment and diminish the holiday spirit.

Plan Your Food

Take time to plan and prepare your meals for the day to resist the temptation of overindulging in unhealthy foods and sugary treats that seem to be everywhere during the holidays. Ensure that each meal includes a portion of protein to curb hunger, stabilize blood sugar, and keep you on track with your health goals.

Mini Workouts

If the holiday rushes your regular workouts, incorporate 10-minute sessions. Go for brisk walks or engage in simple stretches. These mini workouts help reoxygenate your blood, and inversions, such as a bent-over stretch, promote blood flow to the brain, increasing your energy.

Set Intentions

Dedicate 5-10 minutes daily to set intentions for how you want to feel. Whether it's more joy or presence with loved ones, setting intentions early in the day can put you on the right path. Return to these intentions whenever you need a reminder to stay in the moment and experience the holiday season to the fullest.

With these intentional adjustments, you can ensure that the holiday season is not just joyful but also healthy, enabling you to step into the new year without regrets or those extra holiday pounds.
