5 Tips to Stay Safe Swimming this Summer
Ready or not, triple digit temperatures are right around the corner! While swimming is a great way to beat the heat, safety should always be the top priority. Here are 5 tips to ensure that you and your family have a fun and safe summer at the lake, river, ocean, waterpark or pool.
1. Review (and Enforce!) the Pool Rules
Rules might not be the most exciting part of swimming, but they exist for everyone’s safety. Take time to review and familiarize yourself with the pool rules at your chosen swimming location. Ensure that all family members understand and follow these rules to prevent accidents and promote a safe environment for everyone.
2. Eliminate Distractions
Even when a lifeguard is present, it is vital to provide constant supervision when little ones are in the water – even in the shallow end! This means avoiding the urge to scroll through your newsfeed or check emails. Unfortunately, water emergencies happen swiftly and silently, so it’s crucial to stay vigilant. Always keep young children and less confident swimmers within arm’s reach.
3. Never Swim Alone
No matter your age or confidence in the water, swimming with a buddy is a golden rule for water safety. This is especially critical in rivers and oceans, where open water can be fast-moving and unpredictable. The good news is that it’s always more fun to swim with a friend!
4. Invest in a U.S. Coastguard Approved Life Jacket
Unfortunately, those kickboards and unicorn pool floaties often provide a false sense of security. It’s essential to invest in a U.S. Coastguard approved life jacket or puddle jumper – and to ensure that it fits properly. Life jackets should always be worn while boating, regardless of swimming abilities.
5. Enroll in Swim Lessons
Swimming is not only a fantastic summer activity but a vital life skill. It’s never too late to learn or improve your swimming abilities. Whether signing-up your kiddos or looking to improve your own swimming technique, swim lessons provide structured guidance and can greatly enhance your safety in the water.
