5 Best Ways To Prevent Cancer
There's no sure way to prevent cancer, but you can help reduce your risk by making healthy choices like eating right, staying active, and not smoking. It's also important to follow recommended screening guidelines, which can help detect certain cancers early. Keep reading to learn more about these prevention techniques from our friends at American Cancer Society.
1. Get Screened
Some cancers can be found early, before they have had a chance to grow and spread. Regular screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers. Check this list of recommended cancer screenings and talk to your doctor.
2. Avoid Tobacco
All types of tobacco products contain chemicals that can be harmful to your health. But remember—it’s never too late to quit. The sooner you do, the more you can reduce your chances of getting cancer and other diseases.
3. Eat Healthy
Good health starts with good nutrition. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help reduce your cancer risk. Stock your kitchen with healthy ingredients and take little steps towards healthier eating each day.
4. Get Active
At least 18% of all cancers diagnosed in the US are related to physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition, and thus could be prevented. For adults, the American Cancer Society recommends 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week (or a combination of these). Getting to or exceeding the upper limit of 300 minutes is ideal. Limit sedentary behavior such as sitting, lying down, watching TV, and other forms of screen-based entertainment.
5. Be Safe In The Sun
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation comes from the sun and man-made sources like tanning beds. Learn more about how to protect yourself from the sun in our Ask An Expert interview with a board-certified Dermatologist. And don’t forget your sunscreen!
