Why You Should Host A Family Game Night

In-Shape | 13 May, 2022 | Wellness Tips & Trends | Return|

Between work, sports, after-school activities and birthday parties, it can be rare to see all of your family in the same room together. Hosting a game night is a great way to bring everyone together. And when we say “game night,” we don’t mean video games. Keep reading to see why we think you should host a family game night—and how to do it. It’s way easier than you might think!

1. Family bonding offers a boost
Multiple studies suggest that strong family bonds can give kids an extra head-start in their development. Strong lines of communication (through activities like family dinners and game nights) can offer kiddos benefits like larger vocabularies starting at age two, better relationships with peers and a more positive perception of the parent-child relationship.

2. Games can help kids learn
Here’s an exciting reason to break out the game boards: a recent Carnegie Mellon University study suggests that playing simple numerical board games (specifically Chutes and Ladders) boosts some preschoolers’ comprehension of number-related concepts. Board games can also help with motor skills and problem-solving.

3. It means less screen time
Movie nights are great, but we all spend a ton of time on our phones and computers every day. It’s hugely beneficial to put time on the calendar to consciously relax away from screens.

Here’s how to start:

1.Stock up on games.
There are hundreds of games to choose from online, from old classics to new favorites. For a more budget-friendly option, organize a board game swap with friends so you can update your collection or keep your eyes peeled at garage sales and resale shops.

2. Put it on the calendar
Whether you’re doing game nights once a week or once a month, let your family know ahead of time that this time together is a priority. Make sure you choose an evening that’s free from sports or other extracurriculars, so nobody in the family is too tired or feels like they’re missing out.

3. Make it feel a little special
Maybe family game night can also be your monthly night to order pizza, or you could plan ahead and serve some snacks you usually don’t keep in the pantry. For younger kids, consider having theme nights: everyone in the family comes dressed in a costume, funny hats are required…you get the idea.

Whatever you choose, this is a great opportunity to get kids excited for a night with the family.
