How To Start A Plant-Based Diet

More and more people in America have been making the switch to a meat-free, plant-based lifestyle to be more conscious about the foods they eat. Following a plant-based diet can be hugely beneficial to your personal health while also contributing to a healthy environment.

In 2022, around 9.7 million people in the United States now follow a plant-based diet, whether vegetarian or full-on veganism. The way people eat is changing, but transitioning to a plant-based diet can feel overwhelming.

The following tips can help you prepare for the transition and ensure that you’re ready for the lifestyle change.

Know Your Reason Why
When making a big change to your habits, it’s important to identify your motivation for doing so. If you don’t really know why you’re making the change to a plant-based diet, you won’t be able to motivate yourself when the transition gets a little tough.

Whether it’s for personal health reasons or ethical reasons surrounding the treatment of animals and the preservation of our environment, make sure that you know why you’re making the change.

Just like any habit change, understanding your motivations will help you maintain a plant-based lifestyle in the long run. Plus, consistently reminding yourself why you’ve made the change will slowly transform your mindset.

Start Slowly
Transitioning into a fully plant-based diet is a significant change, especially for people who have been eating meat and using animal products for their entire lives.

There’s no need to jump in completely at the start.

What matters most is the long-term changes you’ll make in your life. Start by incorporating one or two fully plant-based recipes into your diet and slowly make incremental changes until your entire diet is plant-based.

A quick, complete change is a recipe for failure, as the drastic change could put you off completely. It may also make you feel ill as your body adapts to a new diet, and you may initially lack energy. Making slow incremental changes will inspire long-term success and a smoother transition into your chosen lifestyle.

Know Your Food
Changing your diet isn't as simple as just swapping meat out for a salad. You need to ensure that you get the proper nutrients, protein, and vitamins when transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. What you eat affects everything—from your energy levels to the health of your hair and skin. Your diet can even affect your mental health, so it’s essential that you know how to give your body what it needs.

Researching recipes and food will help you work out a balanced meal plan. The more you know about plant-based alternatives for protein and other nutrients, the easier it becomes to cut out meat and other animal products. You need to fuel your body, especially if you want to keep up your exercise regime, and finding the right food is part of this.

Strive for Progress, Not Perfection
In the end, what matters most in the journey toward a plant-based lifestyle is the long-term changes you make.

People who embark on this transition will often quit after failing at the first hurdle. Having mishaps and days where the change simply isn’t working for you is normal. But what’s important is the slow incremental progress you’re making. For example, if you go from Monday to Thursday eating a plant-based diet, but on Friday you end up eating meat, don’t see that as a failure. Simply get back on the horse and begin again. The four plant-based days you had before Friday are four more than you would’ve had a month ago, and that progress is valuable.

Focus on your motivation and strive for long-term progress instead of everyday perfection. In the end, the journey to a plant-based diet is all about lots of little steps that add up to a complete lifestyle and diet change.

“If it came from a plant eat it. if it was made in a plant, don’t.”—Michale Pollan
